Views sought on plans for St Peter’s Riverside and Bonnersfield

26/05/2010

Residents, businesses and organisations are being invited by Sunderland City Council to give their views on proposals for a key regeneration site at St. Peter’s Riverside and Bonnersfield on the River Wear. When put into action, the proposals will significantly transform the face of the riverside and boost the city’s economy.

A masterplan has been produced as part of a planning framework that sets out a range of principles which will guide future development and land use in the area.

The masterplan identifies landscaping and public realm improvements around the candidate World Heritage Site of St. Peter’s Church, the expansion of the University of Sunderland’s St. Peter’s campus for academic, commercial and residential use, and the potential development of new housing, commercial and leisure development at Bonnersfield, Scotia Quay and Numbers Garth.

St Peter’s Church and grounds and its association with the site of the Anglo Saxon monastery and medieval priory where the Venerable Bede was educated in the 7th Century AD, can be regarded as the city’s greatest heritage asset.

Cllr Bryan Charlton, Portfolio Holder for Prosperous City says: “The public will recognise there is an important balance to strike between preserving and enhancing this internationally important heritage feature and fulfilling the exciting regeneration potential of the area. The masterplan considers this balance very carefully, and we encourage people to let us know what they think about the suggested planning framework which will guide future development along this highly visible part of our riverside.”

Simon Elliot, of regeneration company Sunderland arc , which has been working with the council and the university to prepare the framework, said: “It allows the city to fully capture the benefits of the candidate World Heritage Site, whilst retaining the ability to maximise the educational and regeneration benefits, particularly the University St.Peter’s campus and key development sites close to the Wearmouth Bridge.”

The area is already identified as a strategic location for change in Sunderland City Council’s adopted Unitary Development Plan Alteration No.2.

Consultation exhibitions are being held between 27 May and 7 July 2010.
