Discover Stadium Village

Located on the north bank of the River Wear, Stadium Village will take advantage of the wealth of opportunity that surrounds Sunderland’s magnificent premiership football stadium.

Extending to a total of 25 ha (62 acres) including the Sheepfolds industrial area, Stadium Village will be home to world-class, state-of-the-art sports and leisure facilities as well as new homes and offices. A proposed footbridge will link the Village to the Vaux development across the River Wear.

Proposal:

  • 14 Ha Brownfield land regenerated
  • Approximately 1,200 new jobs
  • Hotel & leisure
  • New homes
  • Ancillary retail, food & drink
  • Office space

Sunderland arc has taken the lead in developing the area on behalf of the land owners One North East and Sunderland City Council and it will work in close partnership with Sunderland AFC.

Already complete is the spectacular Sunderland Aquatic Centre (led by Sunderland City Council), which is home to a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool and wellness centre and has been selected as a potential training camp for the 2012 Olympics.

A Development Framework was subject to widespread public consultation in 2009 and was formally adopted by Sunderland City Council as a Supplementary Planning Document (which will guide future development on the site) in March 2010.

As part of the Development Framework Sunderland arc and its partners have announced plans for an indoor real snow and ice centre, which would be the first of its kind in the North East. Following strong interest from leisure operators the site was formally marketed in February 2010 and the resulting developer competition is expected to conclude at the end of the year.

Site assembly is ongoing with site acquisitions being made to assist delivery of development proposals.

DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY (JANUARY 2010)

SITE C - 2.38 hectares (5.88 acres)

A unique opportunity to develop a leisure facility anchored by an indoor real snow ski slope as part of the continuing development of Stadium Village.

The development could also house an ice rink plus other leisure facilities, specialist sports shops, bars and restaurants. It will build on the success of the site's existing regional sports facilities - the Stadium of Light and Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

The city already has a strong association with skiing. The Silksworth Sports Complex is one of the largest outdoor leisure facilityes in the country and includes England's premier ski and snowboard centre.

Sunderland has a potential catchment population of 2.65 million people with a one and a half hour drive time and 3.52 million within two hours drive time. With the nearest real snow slope facilities at Castleford, Manchester and Glasgow, Sunderland is ideally located to capitalise on demand for a real snow ski slope.

More than 80 per cent of the site has been acquired and assembled by the arc and its partners and intrusive site investigations have been completed. The site is close to excellent transport links and is within walking distrance from the city centre.

The deadline for expressions of interest has now passed. However, the main marketing information is still available for information purposes. Please click on the links below.
