WORLD CUP BID FLYING HIGH AT CITY FESTIVAL

Children visiting Sunderland’s popular International Friendship and Kite Festival were flying the flag for England in its bid to host the World Cup in 2018/22.

Sunderland has already secured World Cup Candidate Host City Status if England is successful in its bid to host the tournament in either 2018 or 2022.

And at the colourful two-day Festival, which attracted thousands of visitors to the Washington ground, people were showing their support for England’s campaign and celebrating this year’s tournament in South Africa by creating a flag combining their favourite FIFA World Cup countries.

Organised by regeneration company Sunderland arc , in association with Sunderland AFC and Infinite Arts, the activity also encouraged young artists to write a welcome message to their favourite country on a giant England flag.

Emily Taylor, communications manager at Sunderland arc , said: “We had great fun making World Cup kites last year and we wanted to continue the support by tying in the official bid theme of ‘England United, the World Invited’.

“While children enjoyed creating their flags, parents were encouraged to back the bid online at the Festival by logging onto the official website.”

The campaign to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to England in 2018 or 2022 is well underway. The Bid Book was submitted in May 2010 and FIFA will make a decision in December 2010.
