PUBLIC INVITED TO EXPLORE THE SUNNISIDE OF NILE STREET
14/06/2010
Artists and musicians will open their doors to the public in a buzzing back street of Sunderland city centre this month as part of a regional celebration of architecture and urban design.
Nile Street in Sunniside is currently awash with creative people all helping to pump life back into Sunderland’s historic heart.
As part of this year’s North East Festival of Architecture (12-27 June), Sunniside Partnership will be hosting an evening of open studios centred around a special talk by international urban design expert Rob Slinger of KAPOK Architects on Thursday 24 June.
Nile Street is currently home to over 30 different creative practitioners and doors will be opened to members of the public to see and experience how this unique and distinctive mix of industries successfully operate in the regeneration area of Sunniside. Rob’s talk will focus on this very subject. Entitled ‘Catalytic Converters: Nudge Urbanism and the Regeneration of Cities’ he will explore the relationship between art and public realm and the emergence of creative clusters in regeneration areas.
Following the talk, Studio47 will be presenting music from local bands ‘Night of Sevens’ and ‘The Generals’. At Studio Q there will be music from DJ Chicago Damn as well as a variety of artwork on display. Infinite Arts and Ged McCormack Architects will be inviting people into their ‘Inside Out’ installation at 17 Nile Street and there will be a chance to view training sessions by Sunderland Martial Arts. New studio Creative Cohesion, which provides work space for regional glassmakers and other artists, will be showcasing Sunderland glass and an exhibition of Sunderland cityscape photography and poetry. Local artist Dawn Lehrer will also be launching her book ‘Site Verify’, which documents a community art project that took place in Sunniside last year, focusing on the theme of regeneration.
Cohesion director Anne Tye said: “We were delighted when Sunniside Partnership offered us a building and our ideas and aspirations have grown and grown.
“As a charity, ‘Creative Cohesion’ hopes to develop a real hive of activity for artists and public alike, which we hope will make a vibrant contribution to the Sunniside community.”
Sunniside-based art group ASSIGN will be hosting its latest exhibition ‘Sunderland Looking Up’ at 52 Back Frederick Street at 12.30pm to 4pm daily from June 23-26. The work features artists’ responses to Sunderland’s architecture of the past, present and future.
Also taking place in Sunderland as part of the Festival will be an Urban Translation Tour of the city on Sunday June 20. The tour starts at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens at 2pm.
Ben Hall, director of Sunniside Partnership, said: “We are delighted to be showcasing Sunniside once again at this prestigious Festival. Every year we try and present something new and thought provoking around projects taking place in the area and introduce people to the many different sides to Sunniside.
“The Festival provides a unique opportunity for people to come along and experience the excitement and buzz of Nile Street.”
Rob Slinger’s talk starts at 5.30pm at 47 Nile St and the studios will be open until 9pm.
