Bonnersfield/St. Peter's
This comprises the Universityís St. Peter's Campus, the adjoining area east of the Wearmouth Bridge, and the candidate World Heritage Site of the Monkwearmouth Anglo-Saxon Monastery and medieval Benedictine Priory in the grounds of St. Peter's Church.
A key component of future development in this area will be to enhance the character of the candidate World Heritage Site. Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners has been appointed to prepare a planning framework and supplementary planning document for the St. Peter's Riverside and Bonnersfield area, which includes St. Peter's Church. The document is expected to be adopted towards the end of 2009.
The University is progressing further development of the campus at St. Peter's in the form of the Media Centre and Science Park, which Sunderland
arc
has supported.
The
arc
also assisted the City of Sunderland College in securing a suitable location for its new multi-million pound sixth form college, which opened in September 2008.
The area known as Bonnersfield is to be promoted as mixed-use. Sunderland
arc
is continuing to liaise with developer Akenside and its partner Metnor over their proposals for a major mixed-used scheme immediately east of Monkwearmouth Bridge.
Port of Sunderland
New opportunities exist to develop the existing Port operation. Further regeneration will be co-ordinated by Sunderland City Council.
The Port of Sunderland extends to 106 ha (264 acres), a substantial element of which is operational. The Port estate is mainly owned by Sunderland City Council and there are redevelopment opportunities on the eastern edge of the Sunderland
arc
area.
The last 18 months has seen significant investment into Sunderland's huge Port, which is just one mile from the city centre. Access has been improved via the Southern Radial Route, which was completed during 2007. A new crane and warehouse are the latest additions to the site and the city council is currently exploring the possibility of entering into a partnership for the operation of the Port. The aim of this will be to help existing businesses grow and also secure new businesses in future years. Opportunities to diversify activities within the Port are being explored, especially its potential to attract off-shore industries.
The
arc
will continue to support key infrastructure provision to enable regeneration of the Port, support business relocation and increase employment opportunities on sites throughout Sunderland.
